Default 97 taurus A/C compressor clutch

My mechanic tells me the clutch on my A/C compressor seized up destroying the serpentine belt. I'm told the compressor needs replaced and the system recharged. Is it possible to install a belt from a Taurus without A/C and bypass the compressor? what about replacing just the clutch? Is that possible? what is the cheapest, easiest way to get the car running again with or without A/C?
Thanks,
Broke and Immobile

I would try a belt for without ac first and just bypass it.If the compressor is not locked up and the bearing in the pulley went out you can just replace the ac clutch.I probably wouldnt offer a warranty though.I think there were some posts about an ac eliminator kit you might check those out.

Motormite or Dorman makes many bypass pulleys that let you keep the original belt length and routing.

I had the same thing happen. I also have a '97 Taurus and my A/C compressor stopped working and ripped up the serpentine belt. My husband went and bought another (smaller) belt to bypass it and lifted the alternator. I still havn't got the a/c compressor changed and I havn't had a problem. I am mobile which has been more important than a/c. I should look into a fan or something I could hook into the lighter

I am not sure if they make a smaller belt to bypass the a/c on the 3.0L vulcan or if you have to install a pulley. I know for a FACT that the only way to bypass the a/c on a 3.0L DOHC Duratec is to install a bypass pulley in place of the A/C compressor. You can replace just the clutch assembly in which it will cost you about $100-135 just for the clutch pulley assembly when you can get a whole compressor for about $200. I had the same issue with my 98 DOHC Duratec and I just went ahead and replaced the whole compressor since it was OE and the amount of miles on the car and of course a/c cycles. Just remember that if you replace the compressor that you will have to put a vaccum on the system before you can fill it with Freon

Also if you have a DOHC then there are several things that you have to remove to be able to take the a/c off from the top unless you have a lift and drop the subframe assembly down to take the a/c off through the bottom.

I had the luxury of having to replace mine in the parking lot of a home depot!!! LOL
