I have a well-worn 95 Windstar that has an AC problem. Simply stated...sometimes it works and sometimes it does not...and you can't tell when it's going to stop or start again. I just had "everything" replaced in the AC system and it was blowing 40 degrees at the shop. I drove it home the same way. The next day...I drove it to work...worked fine. The car sat in the parking lot all day and when I got read to go home...no AC. It stayed that way until the next day when I drove it home. The next day it was back...and stayed "back" until Friday at 3pm when I was driving home...it just faded away. Who knows when it will be back...I have not checked today...Sunday...but, it may be.
Everyone seems baffled by this one...even the Ford dealer. There has to be something that is telling the AC to quit because something is too hot...or...some vent is not opening...or something very definable has to be occurring. It can't be bad parts, leaks, or the "charge" because great cold air is there some days...and...not others.
Is it electrical? I hope someone has a clue...and thanks for any kind responses.
What do you mean by quits? no fan, clutch not engaged, or starts cooling and then gets warm but clutch is engaged?

If you have intermittant running problems or a flat spot/buck/dying/cutting out while accelerating.
Do your self a favor and try some dedicated gas
line dryer, Double or even triple dose it, It's cheaper
then throwing parts at a problem that doesn't throw
codes!!
Remember...I am no mechanic...just the driver...but, what I mean by "quitting" is best displayed by last Friday. I had driven the car to work and on an errand at lunch time. Both times, the AC worked fine (I like a lot of AC). The car then sat for about 3 hours in 95+ heat in the parking lot. I cranked up to go home at around 2:45pm...and, to my surprise, the AC was working. I had expected all that "baking" in the hot sun would cause it to fail...but, it did not. I drove the car for about 15 minutes and then felt the air temperature begin to "warm up." It was as if the compressor had "kicked off" (though I heard nothing unusual) and decided not to work. I just got back from taking the car for a short spin...and the AC is still non-functional...meaning...everything seems to work...but, no cold air comes out.
I don't know how all the cooling systems inter-relate...that is, engine, transmission, and AC. At one time, I thought the transmission might be getting so old...it could be generating a lot of heat...that would cause the "system" to compensate by turning off the AC. I don't know if that really happens.
Could there be some kind of bad electronic module...a wire gone bad...a "door" that is not opening???
