take it to a garage and have the system vacuumed down.

do that to get the old freon out before you start too, while R134A is environmentally friendly its not something that should be put into the atmospere.

You'll need to recover the freon in the system prior to removing or disconnecting anything. If there was a problem with the internal parts on the compressor, I would flush the system to remove any debris. I would also change the orfice tube and replace all the O-rings you can get to. Try not to leave the system open to moisture for too long or the accumulator may need to be changed. After the system is put back together, vacuum down the system for no less than an hour. You might want to put some dye in the system to find leaks in the future. Also make sure you put the correct amount of oil back in the system. Too much will cause the vehicle not to cool properly and too little will have you starting over in the near future. Let us know how it turns out.

thanks bkf77,it has been a long time since i replaced a compressor,it was on a 1977 ltd.it was top mounted and easy to get too.this is on a 2003 crown vic lx sport i bought new the compressor has made a noise for over a year finally froze up anyway i was trying to find out the easyiest way to remove the bottom mounted compressor thx in advance.
