Default Does my a/c REALLY need recharging????

Hi, new to the forum, thanks in advance for any help.

Just bought used 2002 Windstar, a/c was freezing cold for the first week. Then one day, hot air. A/C button lit, fan running, but air is hot, front and back vents.

So many people have told me it just needs recharging. OK, so why did it all leak out overnight? Could it be a fuse, the compressor, something like that?
