Default 1990 Taurus A/C problem

My daughter has a 1990 Taurus that needs refridgerant but I have been unable to figure out how to make the a/c/ clutch engage so that it will accept refridgerant. On previous ford trucks I have always been able to bypass the low pressure switch therfore allowing a/c/ to run and take on freon, but I need some help here. Thanks for any help.

Could be the clutch is shot. Sometimes you can add a can and the clutch will kick in enough to get freon in the unit.

You should be able to charge it to 40psi or so in order to get the clutch to engage. Connect up your gages and hook the freon can to your low pressure side. When you start filling and the pressure exceeds the low setting, the clutch will engage. Sometimes I have to rev the engine a bit to get it started, but it's usually not a problem. If you are completely filling the system, you need to put it on a vacuum for 30 minutes or so before filling or you won't get anywhere.
