Default Ford Air Conditioning Problems?

Hello,

Our 2001 Ford Windstar is blowing warm air while the air conditioner is set to max cool. So, I bought a can of refrigerant from Wal-Mart that has a gauge attached to it. Problem is this, with the gauge attached and air set to max my compressor clutch engages for a only a few seconds. The gauge reads around 43-45 psi.The clutch does engage and the fuses checked out fine so I'm not thinking electrical. My question would it be better to take it to a mechanic for them to look at it and let me know if the compressor is bad so that I can save the labor charge?

It could be as simple as not having enough refrigerent in the system. If the pressure is too low in the A/C system the computer will not let the compressor turn on, or turn on for too long because with no refrigerent comes no oil, no oil means tearing apart your compressor from the inside. You just need a recharge from an A/C machine. But considering an A/C system is a closed circuit the only reason you lose refrigerent is because you have a leak. So first you need to get the leak fixed then you can recharge your system.

Good Luck
