What is the difference between a "3-axis" mill and an "eight direction" mill?

Most milling machines are three-axis machines; that is, there are handwheels to move the part in the "X" axis (left/right), the "Y" axis (in/out) and the "Z" axis (up/down). In addition to this, the standard Sherline mill has a headstock that can be rotated for angled milling. This is a direction of movement for the cutter, but it is not an "axis" of movement for the part.
