Personally I don't use anything on gaskets. I will use a small dab of "Right Stuff" in the corners where two parts meet but nothing on the gasket itself. If you want to put something on the entire gasket use the same "Right Stuff" sealer or something the same and smear it really thin with your finger on the metal parts and then place the gasket on it. For exhaust use the high temp orange silicone and smear it on the same way. It will seal any imperfections in the manifold and keep the leaks to a minimum. Anything that has an "O" ring use nothing if the surface it hits is clean and no corrosion. If there are any pits smear the sealant over them. Always remember to use a minimum. More is not good in this case. If you get too much and put the parts together it will just squeeze out and it could end up in your oil pump or a passage.
Hey canuck: I am getting ready to start putting my 302 back together and I am wondering what you would use to dress all the gaskets with? front cover, water neck , oil pan , intake etc. Would you use the same thing for everything? I really want to seal this engine up tight and I have never done this before so any help would be appreciated?
