Default 2006 Ford Explorer Limited 4x4 question

Hi All! I'm a new Ford Explorer owner. I love it but...everytime I leave the driveway I have to be sure I have the guide book with me. This thing has so many bells and whistles compared to my 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee!

The first time I had it out I parked, came out to back out of the space and a "Park Aid" light came on. Hmmm was my emergency brake on? I had no idea and after searching the book, called work to ask someone there with the Eddie B model, how do I get that light out? Come to find out it was the back-up signal beep activated when I went to back out of the spot! That is only one of many things I've had to figure out.

Now the question: When you put the thing in 4 wheel drive by pressing the 4X4 button, how do you get it out of 4X4 mode? If I hit auto 4x4, the light goes out but does this mean this vehicle is always in all wheel drive?

Signed, "Please don't tell me this is a stupid question" I already know that!

If you want to disengage the 4x4, press the 4x4 button again. When it is in 4x4 auto, the 4x4 only engages when the speed sensors tell the computer a tire is starting to spin. Otherwise the truck is in 2wd until needed. Hope this helps and welcome to the forum. Lots of knowledgable ppl in here

We've tried pressing the 4x4 button again but the lkight stays on. Can you do that on the fly or do you have to be in neutral. Does it take a few minutes to disengage? Pressing the auto 4x4 is the only way we have been able to get the light out. When we press the auto 4x4, no lights are lit. Thanks for yor reply.

I also own an Explorer and my concern is its off-roading capabilities. It just baffles me why Ford advises in their owner's manual and with a sticker on the vehicle that if it is used for off-roading, it may void all factory warranty coverage since the vehicle is said to be not intended for off road use (the ever misleading FoMoCo ) But I learned that even in snowy or muddy situation the Explorer handles very well. Maybe I could test my Ford Explorer with some real off road action but first I'll have to modify my tires, suspension and probably adding winch to the front bumper.

Wife has a 2007. She pushes the 4x4 auto button.
