Question Ok Mustang Lovers ... Put Your Thinking Caps On!!

Hi Group,

I am trying to help a buddy of mine who has aquired a 1985 Mustang with a 5.0 in it.

The issue why we brought the car in the garage was; because he was having "transmission problems".

Took for a ride and, sure enough, the car was not shifting properly. Well, being fairly good at this particular problem, I went to adjust the kick down bar. To our surprise there was't one there!!

I further looked underneith to find that someone had manufactured a home-maded transmission cross over!! ..... this is where I need some help.

Went and got a crossover for the car. Well, we put the tranny back up ... but guess what.... the factory cross over will not line up with the side mounts!!

So, my next guess was, someone put a different tranny in it... so ... off I go again to find the same year mustang with an automatic cross over. Well, under the car we go again, we put in the tranny and .... guess what.... still have the same problems... now mind you... I had to tackle my buddy so he wouldn't set the thing on fire. I told him I'd get some help.

2 things I am wondering:

#1 is it possible that the original motor was a V-6 instead of the 5.0?
#2 what vin-code do I need to look at to find out??

or am I just missing something??

Thanks group!!

Look at the eigth digit in the vin number.

Get us a picture of the transmission pan in the car, then someone will be able to tell you if its a c4,c5,c6,fmx, aod or whatever!

AODs also use an adjustable throttle valve cable rather than the older styled kickdown linkage you would find on say a C4.
