Default F250 fuel tank leak

Short version of long story. I got this truck with the house I just bought. I was running an errand one day and had just tanked up both fuel tanks in my Ford F250 Super Duty (5.6 liter V8. crew Cab, 4x4, long bed and dual fuel tanks). I came out of Wal Mart to find my truck roped off with fire trucks parked all around it.
The front fuel tank was leaking like , well, a salt and chemically rusted out fuel tank. They salt the road pretty heavy up here in upstate New York and the seam on this tank must be just about shot.

I am looking for a replacement tank on line and they are all refered to as side mount tanks. I have a physical limitation that prevents me from getting down on my hands and knees and looking to see if this tank is indeed side mounted. Is this the case, and if so, would I be safe in ordering a plastic tank to replace the old one and is this something I could do if I could get under the truck?

Your advice is appreciated and I thank you in advance.
