Default 98 Expedition Alternator overcharging / stereo quit

I have a 98 expedition that started overcharging. I drove it for 1
hour in this condition. When it first started the after market stereo started cutting out so I turned it off and now it will only work for the first 10 seconds that I power the stereo on. It lights up and functions just no sound. I am thinking it is the factory amp. Any ideas?

Hey Scotty - the exact same thing happened to our 97 last week. My son installed the stereo and the situation happened on the first night. He said he smelled smoke also. I put the original stereo in and that one still works, but there is an overcharging condition during fast idle - around 3000 rpm. I took the aftermarket stereo apart and there is a burned out resistor and transitor - I assume it is the blue wire output that turns on the amp. It wasn't protected from the over-voltage. The service manual has an analysis process for finding the cause. Can you tell me though, how long had your aftermarket stereo been in your vehicle?
