I have a 2000 ford taurus with 3.0 12 valve motor I removed the motor and installed the new one. I ran the motor and turning the steering wheel. when I cut the motor off I have steering fiuld coming out of the vent on the power steering pump. I jack the car up and with motor off I turn the steering wheel many many many times lock to lock Run the motor steering fiuld comes out of the vent after I cut the car off. What am I doing wrong
You have air in the system. Don't turn the wheel with the engine off.
With the engine running turn the wheel lock to lock. While holding the wheel against the steering stop shut the engine off, when you release the wheel it will push the air out and must likely overflow. The idea is to restart the engine before it overflows and turn the wheel to the other side and repeat. After a couple of times it won't overflow but don't let it run low or it will get air in it again. Keep doing this till it you feel like it is not going to overflow anymore
Did you add anything to the pump after changing motor ? Made mistake of adding mercon 5 in to pump on my 2000 se after trans swap had trouble that would come and go . Barfing fluid . No power assist . Noisey . Was going to change pump but decided to flush system with 3 quarts of new dextron/mercon III . Haven't had trouble since . My brother added power steering fluid to his and it was immediately unhappy with this and whipped it up to a nice red froth as it sprayed all over the engine he just put in .
