Default my 1994 escort lx wont start

Hello everyone this is my first post so hopefully im doing ok. I was driving my 1994 ford escort lx 1.9 manual home one day and it died. It didn't shake or anything just quit, but i still had lights in the dash. When i tried to start it, it turned over but wouldnt start. After towing it home i started troubleshooting. I checked timing belt and it was fully intact. I have good spark, and Im getting fuel to the rail with good pressure. One problem my car has is a bad heater core. I am wondering if my ecm is bad seeing how it is located directly under the heater core. The only code I get from the ecu is 33 which is egr valve. My next step I think is going to be to buy a used ecm, will other models of the escort work, and do you think this is my problem. Im at my witts end, any idea would be much appreciated.

thanx
brendan

What type of distributor do you have. Maybe it moved, see if you can put it in timing. Or take out the spark plugs and regap them and see if that works. Also, sometime your timing belt might jump a tooth if you are going at a fast speed. I hope this help and let me know how it when.
