Controls for persons with arthritis My wife has arthritis in her hands and has a lot of trouble with gear shifters that require squeezing or using a thumb button. This is a deal-breaker for us as we look at new cars to buy. Our 2004 Ford Explorer is great! It has a conventional steering-column mounted shifter which requires no squeezing. Unfortunately, it appears that just about all makes, including the new Explorer, are now going to the floor-mounted race type shifter. The Dodge Magnum has a floor-mounted shifter that follows a zig-zag pattern without a squeeze-handle, and might be suitable.
Fortunately, door handles these days are almost all the pull-type, which are fine, rather than the thumb-botton type so popular years ago, which would not be okay.
Are there any suggestions for cars for those persons with arthritis in their hands? I think this is a market segment that should be considered. |
