On my VW, if you lock the car using the remote, it must be unlocked using the remote, otherwise it sets off the security alarm. One advantage of this security feature is that you can leave the windows cracked, knowing that anyone who attempts to use the unlock switch on the door panel will set off the alarm.

My Ford Escape doesn't work this way. Lock it using the remote, then unlock it via the door switch = no alarm. Is there a way to re-program the security system so that unlocking via the door panel sets off the alarm?

You would need the factory "perimeter" alarm installed.
What trim level do you have?

In Europe, ultrasonic interior alarms are very popular. An movement in the interior trips the alarms. I'm surprised that American manufacturers have not picked up on this, especially for premium cars.

I have had this installed on two of my cars, both aftermarket systems.

Try locking it with the remote with the window down and open the door with the inside handle. If your vehicle has the alarm(most do)the horn should honk.Fords turn the alarm off when you unlock with the key.

No PATS ! Between the PCM and the Smart Junction box, PATS is basically free (except for the transponder in the steering column).

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Ford system does not arm itself for a couple of minutes after you lock the doors (interior button, key of key fob).

Regardless, there are many pages in the 2009 Escape owners manual that talks about the anti-theft system.
